Crop Science and Technologies

Our commitment to crop plant biotechnology comprises two main areas: (1) We apply genome editing for crop improvement and to generate mutants of academic and also commercial interest. These activities allow us to design and study e.g. cereal germplasm with altered endomembrane morphology, transport and post-translational modifications as well as agriculturally relevant properties such as modified pathogen response and storage protein composition. (2) We use transgenic crops for the production of value added compounds. Using crop plants as bioreactors is particularly sensible for recombinant pharmaceutical products that are required in large amounts for potential use in diagnosis and treatment of serious conditions. Seed crops are of special interest due to their superior storage properties and the presence of specific storage organelles that may be used for bio-encapsulation of recombinant products.
